Public Housing: Preserving Homes and Protecting Residents

NHLP’s Public Housing Initiative focuses on yet another affordable housing inventory that has suffered neglect over the past two decades. HUD’s public housing program, with an inventory of over 1.5 million units, serves the country’s poorest residents, with average incomes of $10,000 per year. Unfortunately, since 1980, federal policies and funding levels have crippled the program. As a result, vast numbers of units have deteriorated and over 100,000 public housing homes have been demolished. NHLP advocates restoration of funding for public housing and seeks to hold HUD and its local housing authorities legally accountable for proposed sales or demolitions that fail to conform to regulations. We are also working to empower public housing residents to participate in the management of their homes through formally-organized Resident Advisory Boards (RABs).
