The National Housing Law Project Publishes Visionary Plan For Next President To Tackle Housing Crisis

Recommendations Include Protecting Tenants, Preserving Affordable Homes, Increasing Homeownership, Expanding and Improving Rural Housing, and Bolstering the Voucher Program

WASHINGTON D.C.—The National Housing Law Project today published a visionary plan for the next president and administration to fix the housing crisis by preserving safe and affordable housing and protecting tenants and homeowners. The plan is laid out in a set of documents covering preservation of affordable housing, tenants’ rights, and homeownership. The documents also include a set of tables with regulatory actions that should be taken by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Department of the Treasury.

“Our nation’s housing system fails most people and undermines the country’s economic and social progress. Racism and discrimination are pervasive throughout it, and have yet to be addressed head on. There is no one person or agency in the federal government whose job it is to fix the housing crisis, and that’s why we need presidential leadership,” National Housing Law Project Executive Director Shamus Roller said. “The next president and administration have an opportunity to partner with us and our thousands-strong national network of housing justice advocates to solve the housing crisis. Our plan lays out our priorities to rein in corporate landlords and owners, save affordable homes, protect working poor tenants and homeowners, all while tackling decades of exclusion. Housing must be the top priority for the next president, and we’ll keep fighting until everyone has a safe and affordable home.”
